For the most part it’s obvious. NCVA members are organisations, not individuals.
Usually you will know if your organisation is entitled to membership. But there are many different types of organisation in the voluntary and community sector, so here’s what you need to know before you apply to join NCVA.
FULL MEMBERSHIP
Your organisation can join as a FULL MEMBER if it meets the following criteria:
Based in Northumberland
Most of our members are based in Northumberland and are run for the benefit of people and communities locally.
In this case ‘Northumberland’ is the area currently covered by Northumberland County Council, rather than ‘historic’ or ‘ceremonial’ Northumberland, which also includes North Tyneside and the City of Newcastle upon Tyne.
Active in Northumberland
National or regional charities or ‘not for profit’ bodies have local branches, sub groups or local clubs that either involve people or serve communities in Northumberland. These organisations are eligible for membership through their local groups.
Voluntary or community based
The organisation is either run by volunteers or people from local communities.
Not for profit
The purpose of the organisation is to serve a community need or charitable purpose rather being a business that seeks to make profits.
ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIP
We also have an Associate level of membership, which is open to organisations that don’t fit the criteria for full membership, but who’s primary purpose it to meet a community need.
In Northumberland
Again, the organisation should be based in Northumberland or active in Northumberland as for full membership
Not for profit
Be ‘not for profit’ with a clear local, voluntary or community purpose. This can include:
Community interest companies
Social enterprises
Local (parish or town) Councils
