Newcastle CVS is recruiting a BME Health and Wellbeing Development Support Officer. This is an exciting new post to deliver a comprehensive, cross sector training programme and support community based interventions to improve health outcomes for Newcastle’s BME and migrant communities. The successful candidate will work closely with Newcastle City Council’s Senior Health Improvement Practitioner for Ethnic Minorities, the voluntary and community sector and other public sector organisations.

Newcastle CVS is the major infrastructure body supporting the voluntary and community sector in Newcastle and Gateshead. Our main office is in the centre of Newcastle and we have a particular focus on tackling inequalities.

Newcastle is an increasingly diverse city. The 2011 Census reported 12.7% of the city’s population belonged to Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) groups, with Indian and Pakistani communities being the largest. More recently, the 2015 Local Migration Profile reported between 3,300 and 7000 new long term migrants arriving in the city, the largest increase being among East European EU nationalities.

Both established and new BME communities can face a number of challenges to maintain good health and wellbeing, including language and cultural barriers and access to health services. BME communities are also at risk of poor health outcomes associated with low income, lack of stable employment and poor housing.

We are looking for someone with a good understanding of the health and wellbeing challenges affecting BME communities. You will have experience of working in different communities and experience of community development work, particularly with people from minority / marginalised groups.

You will have experience of designing and delivering training programmes that have clear learning outcomes. You will have good communication skills, both verbal and written and a flexible approach to your work.
